The tragic tale concerns Phaeton, the son of Helios. the Sun God. and Clymene, who separated from Helios and subsequently married to mortal king. To prove to his critics that he is truly the son of Helios, Phaeton asks his father permission to drive the sun chariot. Helios grants permission only grudgingly, because it is a very difficult to control the sun. Phaeton soon experiences the consequences. He is unable to hold the wild horses, bringing the sun too close, threatening the earth's destruction. Zeus is forced to intervene, bringing Phaeton's ride to an end by hitting him with a lightning bolt, causing Phaeton to crash down into the river Eridanus.
