This short orchestral piece attempts to portray the inherent beauty of its unpredictable nature. Without uncertainty and doubt, life would be monotone – everything expected and so predictable. Uncertainty and doubt are what drives the highs and lows of life. they make our life beautiful in many unpredictable ways. The piece opens with a tritone motif that represents uncertainty, along with consecutive 6. 4 chords to create a mood of hesitation and ambiguity. However, solo flute comes in with its melody of 'peace' immediately following that, representing the beauty that comes with uncertainty. The fast changing chords in the harp, and the melodic, rising movement in the strings represent the ups and downs of life. The piece continues to build, with all the motifs interweaved together, creating more hesitation. Eventually, the piece reaches the climax. The climax and the rest of the piece can be interpreted in many different ways. I do not wish to influence anyone’s interpretation by providing mine here – I wish the performers and the listeners have the freedom to interpret the thematic of the piece themselves. As a student who just turned 18, I frequently struggle with doubts about my future and life. The feeling of uncertainty and doubt inspired me to write this piece. Also, several messages and themes are hidden throughout the piece in the form of musical cryptograms, similar to how Shostakovich hid his initials in many of his pieces. The piece is roughly 9 minutes long and it’s scored for 2 flutes, oboe, 2 Bb clarinets, bassoon, 2 F horns, 2 Bb trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, harp, and strings.
