Composer's Notes:In the summer of 2005 I had been the full time organist and choral director for St. Mary's Church in Batavia, NY for six years. The parts of the mass are sung at every Sunday Mass and many holy days and special masses. I found that of the many parts of the mass that I had access to, most of them were not really singable for the average voice. Some were too high, some to difficult rhythmically, and some the congregation was just not comfortable with melodically. I had written numerous psalm refrains in the past (never for St. Mary's but in a Lutheran church position that I held in North Carolina) and felt it was time for a new sound that the congregation and choir were required to sing every week. After a couple of weeks of work, these easy parts of the mass were done. I did use some challenging rhythm at times, but tried to keep the music repetitious and singable so not only the choir and some trained voices would sing along, but all the congregation would be comfortable as well.Now, with the new publication of the New Roman Missal 3rd Edition set to begin at all masses on Sunday November 27th (and Saturday November 26th) there is another part of mass to work on. I have looked through the new parts in the hymnals with the new text and they seem fine, but I will begin using my parts on that Sunday with my congregation and hope that other parishes around the country find these parts of mass easy to sing and enjoyable. I look forward to adding a Gloria, Our Father, and possibly a Kyrie in the near future.
