Gunnar Gunnarsson (1889 - 1975) was one of Iceland’s most respected writers. Living for some 30 years in Denmark, he gained fame and recognition for his literary works, which described both historical and contemporary Icelanders. In 1939, he moved back to Iceland and remained there till the end of his life.

He wrote "Sonnetkrans om Zisca og Foraaret", a group of poems on spring and his beloved, Franzisca Jörgensen, in the spring of 1912, before marrying her that autumn. That same year, these 15 sonnets also appeared in the magazine Illustreret Tidende. In 1937, Gunnar Gunnarson produced an illustrated manuscript of the poems together with his son of the same name, Gunnar, who was an artist; this was published in a book on the centennial birthday of the writer in 1989.
